The concept of Frame and Window is something that I know very well. Last year I created a piece of work for the subject Versions entitled 'Through the Window'. It is a piece about how we as people are always looking at life through a window, and if not we are drawn to them. They allow us to see things in a particular way that shows us a piece of life that we don't pay attention to, but at the same time we are because we are looking through it. The entire piece is filmed through a window, or reflecting upon a window to give us another look onto something else. There are scenes where things have a specific frame to give the audience a sense of where it is, and how it makes us feel whilst looking at it. The reason why I wanted to create this particular piece is that I got the idea from the phrase "daydreaming out the window" - or something similar to that anyway. I thought about how we as humans have created a barrier between us and the world around us, and framing life when we are living in it. Especially when it comes to cinema, we place films into a frame. Whilst reading this post is in a particular frame as well, going further you could say it is a type of window into the thoughts of another person. It made me think about how we can never escape frame and window. We live our lives through them. In terms of distance between the spectator and the screen, within the film that I have created only one scene is actually far away from the spectator. A majority of the film is up close, because it is meant to mimic how we see things in everyday life. The film intentionally has a dazed feel, as if you were looking out the window daydreaming. The film goes through multiple times throughout a few days, to give a real look on how much we are staring out a window and framing our own lives. Within many of the scenes you can see that there are frames upon frames, and windows upon windows. What I find in film is that if something is framed in a specific way, I am much more drawn to it because that is what my attention immediately goes to, it shows or enhances the subject and allows a slight window into whatever a character is doing, for example when Kevin Spacey is checking himself out in the mirror of the window within the film American Beauty, whilst the guy from the other house is watching him do so with a video camera. Not only is the audience seeing two different characters within a frames sequence, but there are multiple frames and windows upon that scene. Kevin Spacey’s character looking through a window that is within a frame, the guy watching him doing the same thing but through a video camera and an actual window, we can never escape frames and windows even if we tried, because our eyes are trained to see the world that way
